Alabama officials are trying to decide if a vicious weekend attack on a tourist in Pickens County was a hate crime.

Sheriff David Abston said 25-year-old Rodney Outlaw of Noxubee County was physically tortured and then dragged behind a car for about one mile, south of Carrollton.

Outlaw is in serious condition at a Tuscaloosa hospital.

Abston was asked if he thinks this is a hate crime.

"We haven't ruled it out," said Abston. "Either he has a problem with his memory or he's afraid of his safety."

The victim had been visiting friends in Pickens County.
