A local teacher is one of four state finalists selected for the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in mathematics and science teaching.
Oakland Heights Elementary fifth grade teacher Ronnie Shumaker says he is honored by his selection as a state finalist.
Award winners receive $10,000 from the National Science Foundation and attend a week of recognition activities in Washington, D.C.
Shumaker says providing students with hands-on activities that show real-life applications of what they learn in the classroom is his technique for teaching math and science.
