Donations Needed

Christmas is more than a month away, however, people are already seeking help for the holidays. So far, officials at Wesley House say they have received scores of names of families seeking assistance.

"We've been taking applications for four weeks. We're still taking applications for people who will not have a Christmas. We don't want anyone to be left out," said center director Nell Grissom.

Aside from serving families in need, Wesley House also provides toys for all of the foster children in a ten county area. In all, Grissom says each year the center serves more than 5,000 families and neglected children.

So far, Wesley House officials say they have not received any donations for Christmas. However, they are optimistic that this will soon start to change. Needed are toys and goodies for young people up to 18-years-old. Each year Grissom says the most popular request from children is basketballs.

Aside from toys, Grissom says the center also needs hundreds of turkeys, hams, hens, canned foods, fruits and candy.

"And if you adopt somebody for Christmas, we would like for you to call us and be sure they are not on our list or somebody's else's list. We clear the people off. There's so many people in need and we don't need duplication," Grissom said.

Saturday, Nov. 30, the Wesley Belle singers will present a special fundraising concert at 7 o'clock at First Baptist Church in Meridian. To make any other donations, you can contact Wesley house at 485-4736.

"I think all people should give back. I can't imagine a child without Christmas," said Grissom.
