Motorists would have to show proof of automobile insurance at roadblocks under a bill awaiting Gov. Haley Barbour's signature. The bill passed both the House and Senate Wednesday.

Currently, law enforcement officers can only ask for proof of insurance if a motorist is stopped for another infraction, such as speeding.

If the bill becomes law, motorists can be fined just for not having insurance.

Senate Insurance Committee Chairman Dean Kirby, R-Pearl, said the bill also reduces the fine for uninsured motorists from $1,000 to $500. He said the fine was lowered because more tickets are expected to be issued under the new law.
