Senate Passes New Reform Bill

The Mississippi Senate Thursday passed a new bill to protect businesses from large jury awards. The measure passed 32-to-10.

The bill does not contain caps on punitive damages. That issue has deadlocked a conference committee that has tried to reach a compromise on protecting businesses from some lawsuits.

The new bill does cap awards for non-economic damages, such as pain and suffering. It goes back to the House for consideration of the changes.

In civil lawsuits, punitive damages are awarded in rare circumstances to punish a company or a person. The two sides couldn't agree on how to protect large corporations from multi-million dollar punitive damage awards from juries.
