Effective July 1, 2005, the state of Mississippi is adding another automobile ticket assessment, this one for motorists caught driving without proper insurance coverage.

Lauderdale County Justice Court Judge Robbie Robinson told the Council of Governments Monday that the additional penalty will further add to what he called "the growing ticket shock."

"Maybe they haven't gotten a ticket in 10 years, 15 years, and then tickets were like $30, $35," said Robinson. "And they come up there now, we only have three categories for tickets. One is $16.50, one $36.50 and one $69.50, and you're paying here a ticket that's almost $200. "

The state's add-ons have raised prices for violations that much, according to Judge Robinson.

Required automobile liability insurance goes from the present $5,000 and $10,000 levels to $25,000 and $50,000 levels, effective July 1.
