Fifty-one years ago, J.E. Strange needed a job.

"I was working with Western Union down in Columbia and I was the manager down there and they went on strike," said Strange. "So I closed it up and came to Meridian and walked the picket line for a while and then that's when I saw this ad in the Meridian Star-wanted, salesman."

Strange applied, got the job and, after 25 years with the Star and 26 with the Newton Record, J.E. Strange retired.

"I love the weekly paper. It's not quite as fast as the daily paper," Strange said. "You've got to do it every day over there, and it's just a good deal."

Strange served the Record as editor and publisher but eventually, at his own request, he returned to his earlier job selling advertising. He says he loves the town.
