Full medical and dental services are much closer to schoolchildren now with the latest tool acquired by Greater Meridian Health Clinic.
It's called the Medical Mobile Unit, and it will travel a four county area serving the needs of local youngsters.
"It will help us to provide services, nurses, and dental care to student who couldn't usually get it," said Emanuel Beaty, superintendent of Kemper County Schools. "It's a win, win situation for Kemper County and Meridian."
GMHC CEO Wilbert Jones said this mobile unit will serve children in the communities where they live.
"They had an immediate need," said Jones. "They were losing health based programs. We did not have the staff to provide the services, so we looked at how to provide the services."
The doctor's office on wheels was designed and built here in Meridian by a team of professionals from Greater Meridian Health Clinic.
"It has everything you'd find in an office," said Dr. Reuben Little. "Dental chairs, sterilization, X-rays, anything that can be done in the office can be done in the vehicle."
Children in Meridian, Louisville, Dekalb, Scooba, and Shuqualak will have access to this service. It is slated to begin service in January 2003 and will be a minimum cost to families.
