Area leaders are visiting Alexandria, La., to see how that community has transformed a former military base.
Lauderdale County Supervisor Craig Hitt said the local delegation wants to see how the community there has survived and prospered after losing England Air Force Base.
"It was a base that closed in 1995 and it has been revitalized into an industrial park," said Hitt. "We'll look at what they've done and for opportunities in the event NAS Meridian is on the list."
The committee is made up of representatives from Marion, Meridian, Lauderdale, Neshoba, Kemper and Choctaw Counties, plus the Stennis Institute.
