An investigation is underway into alleged wrongdoing by a Kemper County deputy.
Sheriff Sam Tisdale says Mike Carrithers was taken into custody Thursday by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms for questioning.
Tisdale says Carrithers is now being investigated for an alleged past felony while in the military.
The sheriff says Carrithers had worked at several law enforcement agencies before coming to his department. For the past 18 months, he had served as the chief investigator for the Kemper County Sheriff's Department.
With investigations ongoing into the matter, Tisdale says Carrithers has been reassigned to a "non-law enforcement" position as a corrections officer at the Kemper County Jail.
