Meridian's mayor has declared Wednesday, May 4, 2005, as the first citywide Annual Day of Repentance.
John Robert Smith read the proclamation Monday in front of City Hall.
It precedes the National Day of Prayer on May 5. The request came from Alan Harwell of Standard Worship Ministries.
"As the word of God says, II Chronicles 7:14, 'If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray, turn from their evil ways, he will heal our land,' and our land needs healing," said Harwell.
Harwell says God impressed on him after last year's prayer observance to help add a day of repentance.
