One Who Cares: Mary Gray

By  |

Mary Gray has a passion for working with the elderly. For the last decade, she has been a volunteer at Silverleaf Manor in Meridian. But her love of her elders began long before that.

"When I was growing up, I was small, and a lot of the kids didn't want me to play with them because of my size," said Gray. "So I would go visit my elderly people and help them pick fruit or vegetables, or wash their dishes or sweep the floors."

And she has never stopped helping them. About 10 years ago, Mary began leading a weekly Bible study at Silverleaf. It has grown by leaps and bounds since then.

After the resident pastor for the assisted living facility passed away, she began leading Sunday services every week and has never looked back. She preaches, teaches, and loves the residents, guiding them through their golden years with a deft touch.

"She's just doing what God led her to do," said Kerry Brown, Gray's friend. "It's her passion. She's so comforting; she's spiritually motivating and enthusiastic. She has such a joy with the way she delivers God's Word."

Gray says she loves what she's doing and has no plans to stop any time soon.

"The passion that I have for seniors, and the love in my heart, they just touch me," Gray said.

And you can guarantee the feeling is mutual for the residents here.
