Shelbourn Hopeful About Hiring Additional Officers

The Meridian Police Department says it one day hopes to be able to add more officers to its force.

Chief Lee Shelbourn tells Newscenter 11 he ideally would like to add about 20 officers to his staff. Right now, the department employees right around 100 officers, but Shelbourn says he would like to increase that to about 120. For now, he says the department is providing the best possible service it can given the amount of resources available..

"We have several things that I would like to do," Shelbourn says. "A vision down the road and which personnel is a part of that. What we're doing now is getting our maximum benefit out of the officers that we do have. "

ok men in blue.you were trained to handle stress.leave your emotions out of doing your job.i am sick and fedup with how you are treating citizens in this community.this is why many have lost respect for you.arrest the law breakers and respect will be earned.the badge doesnt make you right at all times.you all have family also.how would you like it if they were treated like you are treating others.your job is hard enough as it is,but your prideful acts are distrubing.if you cant do the right thing then go sell cars.

Thats ok keep downing the police dept, saing you don't feel we need more police. But let something happen and god forbid you will jump up and down and ask why no cops were near. Can't make you happy no matter how you try. I think you need to take your self out there and work like they do and see how you feel. They do a great job, under paid and under appreaced. I think the Chief does a good job with all he has to deal with when it comes to the narrow mine people that are here. Just let him do his job and he will be fine.

Where's the numbers to justify additional officers.. Quit promoting un -necessary positions and get the cops off cell phones and tint off the windows and get them back in the community. Pay those that are there and serve the citizens. I still see take home cars going home in the county for some officers while others can not take theirs home..

Rather than hiring 20 more police officers, give an increase in pay to the current ones. You always get what you pay for...

Why are more officers needed when Meridian is not growing? It sounds to me like it is a manpower allocation issue.
