Siegelman Concedes

Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman conceded to Cong. Bob Riley Monday night. The Democrat dropped his call for a statewide recount of the ballots cast in the governor's race Nov. 5.

Siegelman told a roomful of supporters that he made the decision in the best interests of the state.

"Had Bob Riley and republicans not blocked a recount at every single turn, we would have had votes recounted," said Siegelman. "But it is 13 days after the elections and not one single vote has been recounted. So, for the good of the state of Alabama, for the good of our people, I am tonight dropping my request for a recount."

The one-term governor said he still feels he could have won the recount, but made his decision after consulting with his family and advisors.
