A 17-year-old Central High School student, Christopher Darnelle Bentley, died in a traffic crash on his way home from his high school prom in Tuscaloosa.
Tuscaloosa Police Sgt. Drake Jones says the crash happened about 12:45 a.m. Saturday. The teen was returning from the prom at Tuscaloosa Country Club and had dropped off his prom date before the crash.
According to the police report, Bentley was trying to merge onto Veterans Memorial Parkway from Loop Road when he lost control of his 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix. The car hit a curb and flipped.
Police said Bentley was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected in the crash.
Central Principal Herb Ragsdale says school personnel are prepared to counsel students when they return to class Monday. He called Bentley "a model student."
A junior at Central, Bentley was in the marching band drum corps and planned to attend Stillman College.
