The Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors on Monday gave the Sheriff's Department approval to start writing tickets for persons who violate the green box ordinance.
New signs have been posted, warning that fines have been greatly increased for dumping unauthorized waste in the containers.
"We've made an effort to make you aware of the increase in the fines. There are signs posted at these locations that have the fines," said District 3 Supervisor Craig Hitt. "We have tried to make them very specific as to what items are to be disposed of at the various locations. Basically, it's household items only."
Illegal material includes lumber, metal, flooring or roofing, or anything other than garbage that is generated within a home.
