The state of Mississippi has fired the Washington attorney who has represented the state on base closure issues since 1993.

The Mississippi Development Authority said the state's $200,000 per year contract with Barry Rhoads and his government relations firm has been terminated.

The executive director of the Mississippi Development Authority said budget considerations and a new approach to fighting base closure were among the reasons.

Naval Air Station Meridian was been one of the bases represented by the firm.
