Longtime television executive Frank Melton beat incumbent Mayor Harvey Johnson in Tuesday's Democratic primary. The results were not close.
Melton received almost 26,000 votes to Johnson's 15,000. Johnson had served two terms as Jackson's mayor. Melton was owner of WLBT-TV in Jackson before a stint as director of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics.
"My next job is to bring 184,000 Jacksonians together so we can move forward as one family, one community, as one city, to do what's best and what's right for the city of Jackson," said Melton, the Democratic nominee.
"After serving at the helm of that ship, the captain of that ship of eight years, I know perhaps better than anyone that it can't sail under just one person," said Mayor Johnson. "It's going to have to sail with all of us on board."
Melton will face Republican candidate Rick Whitlow in the June 7 General Election. Whitlow is a longtime television sportscaster in Jackson.
