Veterans Center Open

The American Red Cross has opened a veterans center at its office on 23rd Avenue in Meridian.

Veterans of all wars, from World War II to the present conflict, are invited to meet together.

Officials say it's a way of emotionally supporting one another and getting help on problems veterans may encounter.

"The camaraderie and the support of other veterans is a very powerful healing tool for these guys. Sharing with someone who has had similar experiences gives them a sense of belonging," said Sammie Bateman, a social worker and readjustment counselor for the Jackson Veterans Center. "Many times they'll talk about how they feel very much on the outside and so coming and being with other veterans gives them that strong sense of belonging and camaraderie. "

Meetings will be every Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Red Cross office at 1820 23rd Avenue.
