With a tug of a rope, the real life Sonny Montgomery unveiled the bronzed one in a ceremony in Starkville, Miss., Friday morning.
The life-sized statue of the former longtime Mississippi congressman is a little overwhelming to its model, Montgomery said.
The statue will sit on the university's Drill Field, a place where hundreds of students pass every day, as a reminder of the leader Montgomery was.
School president, Dr. Charles Lee, said Montgomery is a man every leader should aspire to be like.
The man who took Montgomery's place in Congress agrees. U.S. Rep. Chip Pickering said Montgomery is a great example to everyone, himself included.
Montgomery shrugs that kind of talk off, but he says he does like the idea of seeing a statue of him looking back when he visits the MSU campus.
