The president of the state College Board says no immediate action will be taken on Shelby Thames' contract as president of the University of Southern Mississippi.
The comments from board president Roy Klumb of Gulfport came after a three-hour closed door meeting Friday. Thames' contract runs through June 2006. Thames did not attend the meeting. He has been president at USM since 2002.
Thames has been criticized for consolidating nine degree-granting colleges into five and attempting to fire two tenured professors for alleged misuse of university phones and computer e-mail.
USM also is on academic probation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, its accrediting agency, and has until December to make changes that will remove the sanction.
