A long-time prison escapee is back in jail after a run-in with meridian police Friday night.

Otis James Bennett was arrested after an altercation during a routine traffic stop.

That led to a vehicle and foot chase. Bennett was finally apprehended at Eastern Gardens Apartments.

"During the field interview, the driver and the officer got into a fight. The suspect assaulted the officer, then got back into his car and fled," said Harper.

Bennett escaped from Parchman in 1992, where he was serving a five year sentence for shoplifting. He's being held for the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
