Three freshmen attending the University of Mississippi have been charged with five violations in connection with racial and other graffiti inside a men's residence hall Nov. 6. All three are African Americans. A university spokesman put a positive spin on the developments.

"Our responsibility is to help students grow and mature and become wiser, better human beings," said university spokesman Jeff Alford. "And that opportunity clearly exists here now for the whole experience. For people to learn something very valuable that we hope will change their lives for the better."

The students have been instructed to appear before the university judicial council in January.
