Lieutenant Governor Amy Tuck is expected to announce she is leaving the Democratic Party to become a Republican, according to a published report.

The Clarion-Ledger reported in its Thursday edition that Republican sources say Tuck will announce her conversion Monday at a 2:00 p.m.
news conference.

Tuck aide Nan Tarlton said the lieutenant governor was unavailable for comment. But Nick Walters, state director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development Authority, told the Jackson paper that Tuck confirmed her plans Wednesday.

"Tuck will be a welcomed addition to our party's ranks. She has essentially been governing as a Republican,'' said Walters.

State Democratic Party Chairman Rickey Cole said he wasn't surprised by the news. He says some Democrats will wish Tuck "good riddance.''

Some Democrats blamed Tuck for the state redistricting plan ending up in federal court, which they viewed as friendly territory for Republicans.
