A Jones County man faces up to five years in prison after a conviction for trying to run down a Mississippi state trooper.

Black Wilson, 21, was found guilty of simple assault on a police officer this week.

Wilson could also face a $5,000 fine in the May 2000 attack on State Trooper Brad Bird.

Wilson was accused of trying to run over Bird in the Jones County Funeral Home parking lot following a high speed chase. The incident was captured on Bird's car-mounted camera.

Bird fired eleven shots at Blackwell's SUV to try to stop him. Two state troopers assisting Bird then took Blackwell into custody.

Blackwell could have been convicted of the more serious charge of aggravated assault on a police officer which carries a penalty of up to 30 years in jail.
