Amber Alert Now in Mississippi

By: Associated Press
Updated: Mon 3:30 PM, Dec 23, 2002

The launch of an Amber Alert system Monday makes Mississippi the 30th state to implement it nationwide.

Amber Alerts interrupt radio broadcasts and display information on televisions when a child is abducted and in immediate danger.

Jim Boxx of the Highway Patrol says so far Amber Alerts in other states have been credited with saving the lives of 41 children.

He adds time is critical because 74% of children that are killed by their abductors die within three hours.

Boxx says Mississippi's system is unique because the alerts will also be sent out on CB radio, which is widely used by truckers
