Local Utility Company Warns of Another Scam

The East Mississippi Electric Power Association is reporting that customers have been on the receiving end of phony calls.

"What they are asking them to do is they are asking our members to provide them with their social security numbers," explains communications director Julie Boles, "in exchange the scammers give them an account number to pay their power bill through e-check."

That account number is fake, and the bank account is fraudulent, so not only does your bill go unpaid, but you could run into late fees on your account.

"We began getting calls about the scam last week and this week it has dramatically increased," says Boles.

EMEPA is asking that anyone who receives a fraudulent phone call to contact the proper authorities.
