Gov. Signs Tort Bill

Gov. Ronnie Musgrove Tuesday signed into law sweeping changes to Mississippi's civil justice laws. The governor signed the products liability bill at the Capitol.

In early October, Musgrove signed the first major piece of legislation to come out of the special session. The measure limited jury awards against doctors, hospitals and nursing homes, which are facing rising medical malpractice premiums.

The civil justice bill caps punitive damages at $20 million for the largest corporations, and less on a sliding scale for smaller companies. The legislation also extends protection to "innocent sellers" in product liability cases.

Consumers suing out-of-state manufacturers often sue the Mississippi retailer as well to keep the case in state court. The new legislation would let a judge remove a seller from a case but keep the lawsuit in state court.
