The City of Meridian has requested that residents living in low-lying
areas of south Meridian along Interstate 20 evacuate Sunday afternoon.
This area includes Sowashee Court, Mount Barton and the old fairgrounds. These residents should report to the American Red Cross shelter at Central United Methodist Church at 1004 23rd Avenue.
Residents in the Old Eight Street Road area should evacuate to the First
Assembly of God Church at 1929 Highway 19 North. This includes residents living near Okatibbee Creek and the Jaycee Soccer Complex.
This evacuation request could become a mandatory evacuation order if conditions warrant it.
Those in the evacuation areas should leave by 5:00 p.m. Sunday. For anyone who does not have transportation, transit system buses will be in those neighborhoods between 5:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
Residents in manufactured homes and in RV parks should also seek shelter in substantial structures.
