In terms of Senator Lott's recent comments about Strom Thurmond, NAACP president Obie Clark says he is not surprised. In the recent NAACP report card he says Lott failed in terms of supporting initiatives that would help African Americans.

"I think the real Trent Lott stepped forward to show what he really is and always has been. There's nothing new about this," saidClark.

When asked if he thinks Lott should resign Clark said, "My conclusion is that he should have never been there!"

Meanwhile, state Republican Party officials say they are pleased with Lott's press conference. Furthermore, they contend that he is not a racist.
