Police say one student was in critical condition and another was in police custody after a shooting Friday in Jackson State University's student union.

A University of Mississippi Medical Center spokeswoman confirmed that the injured student, Ben Hart, was in critical condition.

Police said the man allegedly pulled a gun from under his shirt and fired at least one shot during a fight near the university bookstore on the first floor of the student union.

JSU authorities immediately arrested Ryan Mack, 23, and a graduate student, believed to be the shooter.

Friday was the first day of classes at JSU.
