Firefighters from all over Lauderdale County and the Mississippi Forestry Commission fought a large wildfire throughout the afternoon Tuesday.

The fire started between 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. in the area around Old Highway 19 South and Ponds Road near Whynot.

It engulfed several acres and threatened houses in that area. It also destroyed at least one vehicle.

Local forestry officials say conditions are extremely dry and windy right now, and burning is dangerous.
