Miss. NAACP: "Lott Must Resign"

The Mississippi State Conference of the NAACP held a small protest in Jackson Monday. A mixed-race group of about 15 people carried signs and chanted slogans during the short protest. State NAACP president Eugene Bryant said Lott can no longer represent Mississippi's black community.

"There's nothing that he really can do that will erase the image of him standing there in front of a room full of persons praising a person of Sen. Strom Thurmond's ilk, even though he may have repudiated his past," said Stephanie Parker-Weaver of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. "Still does not justify Sen. Lott endorsing him and praising him for what he stood for in 1948."

The Legislative Black Caucus is also calling for Lott to step down from his leadership position.
