Layzell Looks to Kentucky

Dr. Tom Layzell, commissioner of Mississippi's Institutions of Higher Learning, is one of two finalists for a similar post in Kentucky.

Layzell is scheduled for a final interview in Frankfort, Kentucky, on
Dec. 18-19 for the president of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education post.

A longtime higher education leader in Illinois before taking the Jackson post in 1995, Layzell announced in October that he will step down as commissioner next summer.

The Kentucky council is seeking a president after refusing in June to renew the contract of Gordon Davies, who was hired in 1998 as its first president.

If chosen to lead the council, Layzell will be charged with increasing the number of students attending Kentucky colleges, improving the quality of the state's eight public universities, and minimizing the turf battles among the institutions.
