"I'd like to take this opportunity to announce that I will not be a candidate for District One supervisor in the '03 elections," said Hank Florey, 67, now serving his second term in office.
"There's just a lot of things I want to do in life that I haven't done," said Florey. "I want to do more traveling. I want to visit Pearl Harbor. I want to visit Normandy and visit the graves of those fallen heroes who rest beneath the sod over there. I want to spend more time with my grandchildren. I want to have a little time to smell the roses."
Florey said later this was not a spur of the moment decision.
"I've been thinking about this for about two years. And I spent a lot of prayerful thought during the holidays and talked with my immediate family and some other friends and constituents and it was a difficult decision," said Florey. "I really enjoy this job. I really do, but I've got another year to serve. I'm looking forward to that."
Florey was elected without opposition in 1999 for his present term.
On the subject of elections, board president Craig Hitt was reelected to fill the post for another year. Newcomer Joe Norwood was named vice president of the board.
Shortly after the meeting, three other members of the board, Craig Hitt, Jimmie Smith and Joe Norwood, walked across the street to the circuit clerk's office and filed qualifying papers for reelection.
For Hitt it would be his second term, if elected, Smith's fifth and Norwood's first full term. The general election is set for November.
