A body was found in the Newton County community of Lawrence Monday night, just off Interstate 20, near a mobile home. Authorities spent Tuesday there, combing the area for clues.

The Newton County Sheriff's Department responded about 10:15 p.m. to a call that someone had been shot. When they got to the Lawrence community, they found Charles Wash deceased in his truck.

Wash, who was from Decatur, Miss., had just dropped off a co-worker when authorities say he was shot. They say it appears he was shot three times, but Pearlie Alcorn, who was in a trailer just a few yards away, said she heard five or six gunshots.

"I just heard the gunshots. I was in the house eating and I heard a gun," Alcorn. "I just ran and got my baby and next thing I know, I just seen the truck rolling off into the thing. I just stayed in the house."

The truck came to a stop against one of the trees that separates the road from Interstate 20. One person told Newscenter 11 that she was told the suspect was in the surrounding woods immediately following the shooting.

Newton County Sheriff Jackie Knight said no weapon was immediately recovered.

If you have any information on this homicide, you may report it to the Newton County Sheriff's Office at 601-635-2101.
