The Meridian Junior Auxiliary announced Lou Pennebaker as the winner of the 2003 Humanitarian Award for her contributions to the betterment of the community.

Pennebaker is a long-time community volunteer and the founder of the Memory Tree Foundation. She says the award is about patriotism.

"It acknowledges that the ladies of the Junior Auxiliary give honor and respect to what it means to be an American," said Pennebaker, "and the dedication of teaching and reminding ourselves and our children what it means to be an American."

The Humanitarian Award is given annually to a person, organization, or business to recognize an effort to make the community a better place.
