Pickering Re-Nominated

Judge Charles Pickering considers his appeals court re-nomination as an affirmation of his integrity. Pickering Wednesday said he was pleased that President Bush re-nominated him.

Pickering said Bush expressed confidence in his judicial ability and integrity.

The President returned Pickering's and 29 other nominations to the Senate on Tuesday.

Last year’s Democrat-controlled Senate rejected Pickering for a seat on the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Some said the Mississippi judge still faces a rocky confirmation process.

Political analyst Marty Wiseman said because of the racial controversy surrounding Sen. Trent Lott, the Republican Party is trying to distance itself from charges of racism.

That could mean trouble for Pickering's confirmation, even though Republicans now control the Senate.

Wiseman said Pickering's fate could be tied more to that than his ability as a judge.
