Walter Patton is the new president-elect of the Meridian Branch of the NAACP.

"It's a great honor," Patton said. "I've got some big shoes to fill. I do have the experience to do it and I'm looking forward to it."

Patton will replace his mentor and long-time president, Obie Clark. Clark, 70, did not seek reelection after 30 years of service.

"He (Clark) just wants to settle down and enjoy his grandkids for a while," said Patton.

Patton said, as president, he'll continue to draw on the wisdom and experience of Clark and others.

"I'm not perfect. I will make a mistake and I'll be the first one to tell you," said Patton. "But I'm lucky for the older, wiser people of the NAACP to put me back on track when I do get out of place."

Patton said the help and prayers of the community will be instrumental to his success. The president-elect said his agenda will be to promote unity within the community and young people.

"I want to bring the community together," Patton said. "I want to put most of my emphasis into the kids."
