Senate Elections Committee chairman, Sen, Terry Burton of Newton, said voter identification is now a dead issue for the 2008 session.

Burton had persuaded the Senate to pass a resolution weeks ago to allow a voter ID bill to be introduced past the legislative deadline.

However, it also had to pass in the House. The House never took up the resolution.

Burton said Monday that there's not enough time left in the session to address a proposal that would require voters to present identification at the polls.

The 2008 Legislature is scheduled to end April 19.
