Attorney Gen. Jim Hood says coastal residents should beware of people who are asking hurricane victims for personal information while posing as inspectors for his office.
Three coastal offices in Mississippi are designed to assist in the case of fraud, scams, or other post-hurricane issues that impact consumers. None of the investigators working for the attorney general will go door to door seeking personal information.
The individuals posing as inspectors tend to ask for information that can include names, social security numbers and birthdays, all sensitive data that can be used against hurricane victims if it falls into the wrong hands.
The complaints are being investigated by the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division.
In the meantime, residents who encounter a suspicious situation are encouraged to report their concerns and any identifying features of the individuals involved to the attorney general's office.
