U.S. Army Marks 227 Years

The Army celebrated a special birthday on Friday, its 227th.

For the occasion, recruiters in Meridian hosted an open house.

With the ongoing War on Terrorism, recruiters say it is important for the community to support soldiers.

"Not only that, but it shows that the community is behind us as well and for new recruits coming in it will show them that when you decide to join the Army you're making a good decision not only for their lives but for the community as well," said Staff Sgt. Timothy Truitt.

Just for enlisting, Army recruits can receive a number of cash incentives, including college funding, student loan repayment and an enlistment bonus.
