The Phil Hardin Foundation and the Wallace Readers Digest Funds announced a series of grants aimed at promoting educational leadership in the area Tuesday.
Fifty-thousand dollars will go to the Montgomery Institute to initiate goals for education and workforce development in east Mississippi and west Alabama.
"The wonderful thing about the commission and the institute and the spirit in the region now is that we're willing to address the hard issues," said Tom Wacaster of the Phil Hardin Foundation. "These grants will address the hard issues of education and economic development for the region."
Almost $200,000 in grants will be used to create a regional academy for educational leadership with the hopes of having a long-term positive impact on the region's economy.
