Newton County authorities first searched a pond deep in the woods in the Stratton Community last May, after a man in Arizona gave authorities information that a man had been shot and dropped here in late 1996.
The water was drained from the pond then, but no body was ever found.
However, last week, loggers surveying the area found a set of remains about 150 yards from the pond, along with a gun and two spent shells.
Newton County Sheriff Jackie Knight said he believes the remains could be those of a missing man he declined to identify.
Dental records are expected to be shipped in from Arizona to try to verify the identity of the remains.
Knight said it could take several more days to positively identify the remains as belonging to a particular individual.
If so, the sheriff said it will mean Newton County deputies will soon take a trip to Arizona, to arrest the two men the department believes are responsible for his death.
