The state Department of Human Services will receive $4.7 million in federal funds for having the highest food stamp accuracy payment rate in the region for 2001.

Pam Simpson, interim director of the department's Division of Economic Assistance, said the accuracy rate is based on a random sampling of cases for which correct eligibility and amount of benefits are measured.

The state's accuracy rate was 96 percent for fiscal year 2001, the fourth best rate in the nation.

The state is expected to receive the money in July. That payment will make the third consecutive financial award the state has received from the federal government for a high accuracy rate.

Simpson said the federal funds would be used to cover administrative costs of the food stamp program. The funds were not factored into the 2003 budget.
