Gen. John W. Handy visited the 186th Air Refueling Wing Friday, meeting with some of the leadership and troops who've played a large role in the ongoing war on terrorism.
Handy is in charge of the U.S. Transportation Command, the single manager for global air, land and sea transportation for the Department of Defense.
The general plans to visit every unit under his command over the next month and a half, as troops are deployed to the Middle East in preparation for a possible war with Iraq. He said national guardsmen like the ones here in Meridian could have a major role in any war.
Handy's command will be very busy over the next few weeks and months, deploying thousands of troops to places all over the globe, but specifically to the Middle East.
And in all likelihood, troops from both Mississippi and Alabama will make up a significant percentage of those men and women.
