A Tupelo shopping mall has sustained damage but no injuries have been reported after a possible tornado touched down Thursday.

An employee with the Tupelo Fire Department, Cathy Gault, said units were sent to the area of Barnes Crossing Shopping Mall but no fires were reported. She said there were downed power lines in the area and some damage.

The damage occurred while several north Mississippi counties were under a tornado watch, as another round of potentially severe weather moved across northeast Mississippi.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation said its district office sustained damage to several buildings. There were reports of downed trees, roof damage to several buildings at the district complex, and loss of electric power.

Lee County's emergency communications director, Paul Harkins, said his office had received no reports of serious injuries. He said there was structural damage to buildings on the west side of Tupelo, near the furniture market, and damage to some businesses on North Gloster Street, north of U.S. highway 78. He wasn't sure of the extent of the damage.

The Lee County sheriff's office said its officers had reported spotting a possible tornado moving in and out of the clouds in the Tupelo area during the morning hours, possibly containing debris.

Police and Lee County deputies are assessing the damage.
