It's estimated that over 100,000 people visited Meridian for the two-day Wings Over Meridian air show. That's one reason NAS Meridian officials are calling the event a big success.

"People still talk about the air show and how the people who worked on it and how much fun they had working on it," said base commander, Capt. Russell Knight.

An air show of this size requires a lot of work and cooperation between base officials and local government. Base security worked closely with the Meridian Police Department, Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department. homeland security and Lauderdale Emergency Management Agency.

And while the Blue Angels are the big draw for the air show, local business were seeing green that weekend as well.

"We had a lot of people in our area," said Lauderdale County tourism director Suzy Johnson. "And when you fill up our 1700 rooms at 2.5 percent of the rate, then that is good."

And for those who can't wait to see fighter jets showing off their tricks, you only have a three year wait. The next air show will be in 2011 and coincide with the 50th anniversary of NAS Meridian. That year will also mark the 100th year of naval aviation.

I believe it was a big success. I do agree that parking arrangements could have been a little better but, that is why they open the gates early so you can come and have plenty of time to get in. If the show starts at 11 a.m. you can't leave home at 10:30 a.m. and expect to get in to catch the show on time. I left home at 9:00 am and made it in plenty of time to catch the show.

If the airshow was such a big success then why did it take over two hours to get through the gate and park and then have walk what seem like an eternity. Then there were the people who waited in line for over two hours and got turned away because there was no more parking available. What about the people who worked out at the base? Why were they not allowed to park close? The people who put on the airshow in Meridian have ALOT OF THINGS to think about before putting on another airshow here in Meridian.
