Rain fell early Thursday in Mississippi and Alabama, raising the level of creeks, streams and rivers, and causing problems for drivers.

The National Weather Service reports almost three and a half inches at Key Field in Meridian over a 10-hour period. The rain was much heavier than that in some locations.

There has been spotty flooding of some streets and roads, due to runoff, in low-lying areas.

Reports of scattered damage from strong storms came from the Forrest County area. But so far there are no reports of any injuries.

Both lanes of U.S. 49 northbound were closed briefly in the Camp Shelby area due to downed trees, and one lane of U.S. 49 southbound in the area was closed at midday while crews repaired a downed power line in the right-of-way.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency says it has reports from Hancock and Pearl River counties of downed trees.
