As the temperatures continue to warm, many people are looking for the closest watering hole.

Residents of east Mississippi have had to look for others ways to chill out during the last two summers. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been forced to keep the beaches, as well as other lake amenities closed due to dangerously low water levels.

The water level is up five feet. Project manager Jack Huntley says, after two bad years for recreation, this year will be good.

"And this year we are going to have a full lake," said Huntley. "All summer we are up where we should be and the lake looks real good."

The lake is filled by run-off water, and this year, the rain finally accumulated enough to beat the recent drought conditions.

"Right now everything is open, the boating, the fishing. So if you want to come out and fish now, that would be great," Huntley said.

Even during the last two summers, boaters were welcome to hit the water. But Huntley says the fishing wasn't great and it was difficult for boaters to maneuver in the water.

"This year we will have the marina open, the water slide open, so everything on the lake will be open this year for people to use," said Huntley.

The beaches will officially open Saturday, May 24, Memorial Day weekend.
